20 years ago, a small San Diego business called Home Brew Mart opened its doors to provide all the materials needed for people to create their own beers at home. Two of the original brewers; Doug Duffield and George Cataulin, created a unique American IPA style beer called North Star that soon resonated with the customers. Eventually the small brewery created its new name and Ballast Point was launched. So what happened to that beer that started it all? Its named was changed and the beer that would become legend was named Sculpin. Sculpin has since become one of craft brewing’s most highly regarded beers and was the lynchpin in making the deal that recently saw Ballast Point sold to Constellation Brands for one billion dollars.
In the true brewing spirit, Ballast Point has created a contest called the Original Gravity Homebrewing Competition to celebrate their long history in the craft beer category. Watch the video below for details.
