World’s Best Coffee Crumb Cake Recipe

Sometimes, there is literally nothing better than sitting down with a piping hot delicious coffee and a perfect piece of coffee crumb cake. Unfortunately you are on your own for the coffee, but we can help you with the cake. Finding the world’s best coffee crumb cake takes a lot of tasting, and a lot of coffee. But we did it:

The Topping


  • 1 cup (packed) dark brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, melted, warm
  • 2 1/2 cups all purpose flour

Whisk together both sugars, cinnamon, and salt in a medium bowl. Stir in melted butter until blended. Add flour and fork until the mixture is all smallish clumps. You’re done when it looks moist and clumpy (should still be wet), set aside.

The Cake


  • 2 1/2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 3/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup (1 1/2 sticks) unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 1/3 cups sour cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract


  1. Preheat oven to 350 and grease a 13×9 baking dish
  2. If you have a sifter, now is one of the fun times you get to use it. If not, use a fine strainer and sift together flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt into a bowl
  3. In a separate bowl, use electric mixer to beat butter until smooth
  4. Add sugar to the butter and beat until light and fluffy
  5. Add eggs one at a time, blending each completely
  6. Add sour cream and vanilla extract and beat until combined
  7. Remember that first bowl? Add that flour mixture in 3 additions, beating just until incorporated after each addition
  8. Pour all this into the baking dish and make it nice and flat
  9. It’s topping time. Use your hands to form small clumps of topping and spread across the cake. The topping layer should be THICK
  10. Bake at 350 until it’s done, usually about an hour. Top should be deep golden brown and test stick should come out clean.
  11. Let cool completely, this is a good one to do up to a day in advance and leave at room temperature
