Position: Cook
Part-time/Full-Time: Full-Time
Department: Operations
Reports to: Dining Services Manager
FLSA Classification: Non-exempt

Summary
Primary responsibilities are ensuring nutritious meals are properly prepared and served in a timely manner. Oversight of other staff and shelter guests working in the kitchen and dining hall is an important part of this position.

Essential Responsibilities

Essential Function 1: Food preparation and Oversight

  • Assist with planning and preparing meals while observing all food safety requirements for handling and food prep.
  • Assist with inspection of all donated food items to determine quality of food, as required.
  • Communicate with Dining Services Manager regarding food that needs to be ordered, as required.
  • Ensure the kitchen is clean, organized, and safe.

Essential Function 2: Supervision of Shelter Guests

  • Assist with supervising shelter Guests working in the kitchen and dining hall to ensure they adhere to predetermined best practices for cleanliness and safety, as required.
  • Assist with supervising shelter Guests to ensure all cooking appliances, pots and pans, dishes, bowls, cups and utensils are cleaned and sanitized properly; other areas that need to be cleaned and safe are the dining hall, all counter tops and coolers and freezers.

Essential Function 3: Other Considerations

  • Utilize proper safety procedures including proper safety equipment and lifting techniques while performing assigned job duties.

Education and Experience

Additional Eligibility Requirements

  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug test and background check.

Work Environment

  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time.
  • Position requires a lot of repetitive motion: lifting, pushing, and carrying.
  • Ability to lift 30 lbs.
  • Ability to work in areas with extreme heat conditions and frequent interaction with gas burners, heated equipment, grease, sharp machinery, and other at-risk conditions.
